SIP Trunking vs. Hosted PBX


As the modes of communication in the present day businesses are getting diverse, VoIP remains the mainstay in this regard; but how it’s being delivered, remains the main concern of the businesses. There is no hard and fast rule for its implementation as compared to the phone industry. Different businesses are coming up with different ideas on how to implement it, and one may expect many more different options available in the coming days and years. For the time being, it’s been argued whether a business should go with a SIP internet telephone services or a hosted PBX accessible via IP network.

One of the modes of having VoIP is to set up an IP PBX, which many businesses have in their infrastructure. This IP PBX is very beneficial regarding free calls within the office, which can be made through internet, as the business is connected through internet. It is also very cost effective, as only expense is the purchasing of hardware. Besides this, a business can move a step ahead by connecting its own IP PBX with outer links by purchasing SIP trunk. SIP trunk is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and streaming media service based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) by which Internet telephony service providers (ITSPs) deliver telephone services and unified communications to customers equipped with SIP-based private branch exchange (IP-PBX) and Unified Communications facilities.

Most unified Communications provide voice, video, and other streaming media applications such as desktop sharing, web conferencing, and shared whiteboard. This system will make IP PBX calls through internet and will enable the business to connect to PSTN system anywhere and everywhere.

The other mode of implementing VoIP is a hosted IP PBX. A hosted PBX is a cloud based PBX system accessible through an IP network. A hosted PBX resolves all issues regarding hardware, software, training, maintenance etc. and entirely relies on ITSP and all a business has to do is to make valid IP calls. There are two options available for this to happen; firstly by using IP phones through IP PBX and secondly by using devices connecting traditional analog phone lines to the digital phone system or voice over telephony system.

Both modes of implementing VoIP have their merits under controlled environment. SIP trunking is favored by the businesses who want to manipulate the phones in their favor, thereby having a complete hold on the system. With this manipulation, the business creates a controlled environment; the only demerit is that it goes heavy on the pocket. It is just not because its money, but it occupies space and also requires the work force to keep it up and running. Most of the businesses cannot cope and justify with this phenomenon and just want to do business as usual.
The other method of hosted PBX is a much more simple system and it’s suitable for those businesses that are low on monthly budget. Both of the methods have their own merits and demerits and anyone of these methods can be chosen by a business catering its own need.
